Open Question: What exactly do we use fossil fuels for? (Solar power v.s. Fossil Fuels)?

I'm writing an editorial on using solar powered satellites rather than fossil fuels because fossil fuels will soon run out whereas solar powered energy is powered by the sun which has billions of years left before it burns out. To start it off I wanted to talk about some of the things we take for granted that we use fossil fuels for. Power plants, vehicle engines, coal power plants.. what else? Open Question: alternative energy sources?

as most of you have probably already noticed the gas prices have been rising a little lately and are expected to top at about 5 dollars. also there seems to be extensive evidence that points to burning fossil fuels as a bad thing, not only in terms of climate change but its also supposed to be harmful to the ozone layer and the environment in the form of acid rain. so heres what i was thinking: i know that it is possible to run a car of of electricity and i also know that this style has yet to be perfected so with work you could probably get really far per charge. i also know that there are almost unlimited reserves of natural energy like solar power wind and hydroelectric power. so how long will it be before gas will completely step aside to form way for electricity. will it ever happen? Open Question: Is it possible for an alternative to petroleum?

I think not because globally plastics is the building block for most new products, sun not being an alternative to plastics which is a derivative of petroleum. Without plastic(petroleum), automobiles will not be produced because the new autos are supposedly lighter than if built by metals. The purpose of being lighter is to use less gasoline, a derivative of petroleum, which will lessen atmospheric pollution. More plastic products pollute the earth. Therefore, the world is doomed even if every human on earth goes GREEN! (read more)
