Small Solar Home Exterior Wall Framing

Step 1:

Create the layout for one wall at a time by lying the 2″x4″ boards out on the subfloor. Each wall will have a bottom plate and a double 2”x4” top plate.  The top plates should overlap each other as shown in the photos below.  This ties all the walls together.

Walls will be 2”x4” studs placed 16 inches on center. The four main walls should measure 8 feet in height.  The front wall should have a 2 foot roof support wall in addition to the 8 foot main wall.

Step 2:

After assembling each wall on the subfloor you can either add the outside wall sheathing before, or after you raise the walls into place.

Step 3:

Brace each wall temporarily with 2”x4”’s  as you raise them.

Step 4:

Repeat above steps for all walls.

Step 5:

Ensure all walls are level, flush, and square by measuring from corner to corner in an X pattern.

Step 6:

Nail all four walls together and to the subfloor ensuring the outside of the walls are flush with the subfloor.  Also, remember to overlap the top plates on all four corners and nail them together from above.
